The John Deere Trailfire was built from 1979 through the early 1980s as Deere’s all-around trail sled for riders who wanted reliability and comfort more than race-only speed. Available mainly in 340 and 440 versions, the Trailfire used John Deere/Kawasaki “Fireburst” fan-cooled twin-cylinder engines (around 340cc and 435cc) with Mikuni carburetion and CDI ignition, known for easy starting and smooth mid-range power.
The 440 Trailfire produced roughly 38 horsepower and weighed about 370 lb, giving it a solid power-to-weight ratio for groomed trails and lake running without being overly heavy to handle. A slide-rail rear suspension, 15-inch track, mechanical disc brake and manual steering kept the chassis simple and dependable, while a 7.5-gallon fuel tank offered good range for long days in the woods.
