Vehicle Information – Mercury Trail Twister 440 Snowmobile
The Mercury Trail Twister 440 was built when Mercury was taking lessons from the racetrack straight to the trail. As a high-performance trail sled, it used a lively 440cc class twin-cylinder two-stroke engine tuned for strong mid-range pull and serious lake-run speed. Paired with responsive clutching and a relatively light chassis, the Trail Twister jumped hard off the line and stayed in the heart of the powerband across groomed trails and frozen rivers.
Its low, wedge-style hood and short windscreen gave the Trail Twister a racy profile, while the wide ski stance and performance-oriented suspension helped it carve more confidently than many of its competitors. Leaf springs up front and a rugged rear suspension with a long track provided a mix of stability and traction that made the sled feel at home in both tight woods and open country.
Mercury’s snowmobiles were only built for a short window, but the Trail Twister line earned a reputation for sharp handling, strong motors, and aggressive styling. Today, the 440 Trail Twister is a favorite among vintage collectors and racers who remember how hard these sleds could be pushed on ovals, drag strips, and gnarly weekend rides.
