Vehicle Information – John Deere Liquifire 440
The John Deere Liquifire 440 was Deere’s hot-rod trail sled in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It used a liquid-cooled two-stroke twin in the mid-400cc class, tuned for crisp throttle response and strong mid-range pull. Twin carbs and CDI ignition helped the engine light quickly in cold weather while delivering smooth power when you rolled it on across the lake.
Underneath, a slide-rail rear suspension and a narrow, performance-oriented chassis gave the Liquifire sharper handling than many of its rivals. A 15-inch track, aggressive cleats, and a relatively low center of gravity made it feel planted in corners but still playful when you picked up the skis over drifted snow. The familiar black paint with yellow striping and Deere’s leaping-deer badge turned it into an instant icon on the trail.
Among vintage sled fans, the Liquifire has a reputation for being one of the best-sorted machines John Deere ever produced: smooth, fast for its size, and unmistakable when you see that black hood and yellow trim appear out of the snow dust.
