Vehicle Information – Apollo Snowmobiles
Apollo was one of the smaller snowmobile brands that flourished during the boom years of the early 1970s. Like many independents of the time, Apollo focused on simple, rugged trail sleds built around mid-sized two-stroke engines in the 300–400cc range, tuned for strong mid-range pull and easy starting in deep-freeze conditions. Most machines used a lightweight steel chassis, narrow ski stance, and a short tunnel, giving them a quick, lively feel on tight lakeshore trails and ditch lines.
Suspension was straightforward but effective: leaf springs up front and bogie-wheel or early slide-rail systems in the rear, paired with a modestly lugged track that balanced traction with light steering effort. Bright colors and bold graphics – like the green hood shown here – helped Apollo stand out among a crowded field of competitors. Today, surviving Apollo sleds are prized by collectors who appreciate their underdog status, distinctive styling, and the raw, mechanical character that defined the golden age of small-brand snowmobiling.
