The Kawasaki ZX-9R was one of the kings of the open-class sportbike scene in the mid-to-late 1990s. Built around an approximately 899cc liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve inline-four, the ZX-9R delivered serious horsepower while still being more comfortable and street-friendly than pure race replicas. An aluminum twin-spar frame, fully adjustable suspension, dual front disc brakes and ram-air induction gave it sharp handling and big top-end speed, while its slightly roomier ergonomics made it a favorite for real-world riders who still wanted brutal acceleration. Today, clean ZX-9Rs are cult classics – fast, tough and very definitely not subtle.
