Vehicle Information – Speedway Blue Max 650 Snowmobile
Speedway Products, Inc. of Mansfield, Ohio built some of the wildest performance sleds of the early 1970s. Designed by former Rupp engineers, the Speedway line used an aluminum chassis, low center of gravity and disc brakes on all four corners—features that earned it the nickname “the blue Ferrari” in period advertising.
At the top of the lineup sat the Blue Max 650, powered by a Kohler K645-3SS free-air triple with tuned pipes. In race trim these engines were rated around 90+ horsepower, giving the sled serious top-end pull for ovals and lake racing. Contemporary accounts list the 650 at roughly 495 pounds dry with a 121" track, .75" lugs and up to 96 studs, plus about 6 inches of front suspension travel—serious numbers for its era.
Production of all Speedways ran only from 1972–1974, with total output estimated in the hundreds, making surviving Blue Max 650s rare and highly sought-after among collectors. Their combination of light aluminum chassis, big triple power and aggressive styling has cemented them as one of the iconic American-built muscle sleds of the vintage era.
